The Past
Monkfest started in 2003 as a little idea formed in the mind of Colleen MacAlister, owner of St. Francis House in Madoc, Ontario.
It was to be a postive spin-off of the former 'Punkfest' held out in Spiderland (near Madoc) Punkfest was closed down due to unfortunate circumstances that happened during the festival. Although, it was never a positive place to be to begin with. Infested with drugs, alcohol and fights, Colleen dreamed of something where kids could still come out to enjoy the music but be safe and of a right state of mind.
In the winter of 2002 Colleen vocalized her idea and with the help of a team of friends and volunteers work began to prepare the St. Francis Farm for a weekend of music.
We learned a few things pretty quick the night before especially that no matter how many volunteers you have, its still not enough to push a transport & flatbed out of the mud.
Monkfest 2003, held (now annually) on the last weekend of May hosted over 100 people. Tents littered the fields as people spent the night. It was bitterly cold but not a negitive word was said. This was only the beginning.
The Present
Monkfest 2004 was a great hit this year! more than 200 people came out! There we certianly a lot more tents in the fields and we welcomed back a lot of the same bands who were with us the year before! What a great encouragement!
There were no 'incidences' of any kind. Although our over-night security did get a little worn out - but a special thanks to them! Also a special thanks to the volunteers who came out 7 days before the festival to mow the fields, cut back poision ivy, build signs, carry a stage and clean out barns. You guys will be rewarded for your efforts I'm sure.
Also a thanks to the bands who came from all over! The locals who are like a family, and the out-of-towners who drove so far for just a bit of gas money and free eats. You guys are awesome. If you were at Monkfest 2004 we're finally getting some pictures up for you to take a look at - see if you can find your face (or your tent!)!
The Future
What to make of Monkfest 2005? Well, we have started to make plans, and St. Francis House will soon be welcoming pilgrims on the last weekend of May! Let's just hope the weather is as good was it was in 2004.
If you are interested in playing at Monkfest, volunteering, donating or just wanting more information, please feel free to email us at info@monkfest.com
Lets see if we can double our numbers again!
Oh, and just to note for anyone's curiousity, all the funds that come in from Monkfest go to The Foundation of Friendship and Faith - a youth drop-in centre located in Madoc Ontario and Trenton Ontario.
